Deep sea fishing rod bent on a boat in the Arabian Gulf

Deep sea fishing in Abu Dhabi means heading past the shallow reefs into deeper, open water where the bigger and faster fish feed. It is the trip for anglers who want a real fight – kingfish, cobia, longtail tuna and barracuda – and for groups who want a full day on the Arabian Gulf.

What you can catch offshore

  • Kingfish (kanaad) – the classic offshore catch, best from October to April.
  • Cobia – big, strong fish that often swim near floating objects.
  • Longtail tuna – fast and powerful, a prize on full-day trips.
  • Barracuda – hits lures hard all year round.
  • Trevally and queenfish – great fighters around channels and structures.

How long should a deep sea trip be?

Plan for 6 to 8 hours. The boat needs time to run out to deeper water, and the captain needs time to try more than one spot as the fish move. Shorter 4-hour trips are better for bottom fishing closer to the coast.

Techniques used

  • Trolling – lures or baits pulled behind the moving boat for kingfish, tuna and barracuda.
  • Bottom fishing – baited lines dropped over deeper reefs for hammour and emperors.
  • Live bait – used by experienced captains for cobia and bigger fish.

Best season for deep sea fishing

The cooler months from October to April bring the most active fish and the most comfortable days at sea. Summer trips work too, but start early in the morning to avoid the heat.
